A. L. Huber has built two restaurants and managed a major renovation of another for the owners of the SmokeHouse BBQ. This particular restaurant, designed by Kaster Architects and located at Zona Rosa, Kansas City North's exclusive retail and entertainment district, is a masterpiece of color and texture in the interior. The decor combines rich, dark-stained millwork and trim with a three-coat process faux paint scheme. A stained glass dome salvaged from Harry Starker’s restaurant on the Country Club Plaza provides a beautiful accent in the main dining area. A large U-shaped bar features five flat-screen televisions for sports lovers. The most interesting challenge of this project was the construction of the concrete and masonry barbecue pit. It is an original design by the owner and imparts true hickory pit flavor for the barbecue fanatic. The SmokeHouse BBQ has two other locations, in Independence and Gladstone, and recently opened a fourth in a renovated restaurant in South Overland Park.
