The goal of the Orangutan Exhibit and Dayroom was to create a naturalistic outdoor exhibit space for approximately eight orangutans. The new habitat includes a water feature, naturalistic climbing structures, and realistic nesting areas. The outdoor exhibit connects to the orangutan’s indoor exhibit through a new secure transfer system that connects the exhibits to the building. The outdoor exhibit includes a 14’6” dry mote below the surface level and a Tree Pavilion viewing area for visitors. A Rainforest Walk leads visitors into the lower viewing area, the Dayroom, where visitors can view the orangutans inside.
A.L. Huber worked closely with the design architect from Portland, Oregon, and the local architect. The project’s success was largely due to the constant and open communication of our team and the Zoo staff. Every decision was thoroughly thought-through for the public’s safety and the orangutans’ best interest.
